Director, Anna Segreto, brings "Venus in Fur" to The Studio Players

An empty theatre, a frustrated writer, and a controversial play is in the audition process. The actors so far have been uninspiring and the writer prepared to go to home. A girl walks in…

The mind and other games of “Venus in Fur” are coming to life under the talents of Director Anna Segreto. This is a director’s piece needing the skills of a master’s hand. Too heavy and it becomes ponderous drama, too light and it’s a sex farce. Anna is just right.

I saw part of an early rehearsal and I can see where this is going. There were chuckles and sexual tension and you can see where this is heading. Anna’s actors seemed very secure in their trust of their director and relaxed with each other. All of this while still carrying scripts.

“Venus in Fur” is a very different type of play and it will be fun to watch it as it builds to performance level. Tickets now on sale at: https://the-studio-players.ticketleap.com/venus-in-fur/

Stage 2 Improv -- Live Theatre Without a Net!

What do you get when you have ten people, an anvil, the queen of England, a toddler soccer game and Christmas? I have absolutely no idea, but I bet it’s funny.

Stage 2 Improv is live theatre practiced without a net.  This talented troupe gathers information from the audience and spins said information into a live sketch running from 3-5 minutes.  They repeat this sequence multiple times each performance to the delight of their audience.  No show is ever the same and the players rotate through the sketches and programs.  Even if you’ve seen them before, with the joys of live theatre, the next show you see will be totally different.

Think of a game of tennis or thrones.  The players keep the verbal balls in the air until skewered by a fellow performer.   There is a skill to this unlike other types of live theatre.  Having worked at a murder mystery dinner theatre where all of the interrogations were improvised I can really appreciate the quickness of mind and tongue shown by these merry pranksters.    You might think it is all smoke and mirrors and in a way you’d be right.  There is a magical feeling to watching with a sense of wonder as to how all of these disparate components come together in a sketch that makes sense.

And don’t forget there’s FREE POPCORN and no you can’t toss it at the actors if you don’t agree with their take on your suggestions.

Stage 2 Improv graces the stage of The Studio Players several times each year and luckily enough you have the opportunity to see them this coming Saturday. To see them in action, all it takes is a short drive to the Golden Gate Community Center to get your improv fix.  They perform Saturday June 29th at 8:00 PM.  Follow the links below for tickets.

Welcome to the Studio Players! Live Theatre in Southwest Florida

The Studio Players has been bringing cutting edge live theatre to Southwest Florida and Naples since 2013.  Conveniently located in the Joan Jenks Auditorium at the Golden Gate Community Center, The Studio Players has produced everything from fluffy comedies like “Pageant Play” to the dramas of Tennessee Williams and Lanford Wilson.

The last season just finished with a lively production of the comedy “Over the River and Through the Woods”.  The current season is already in motion with “Don’t Talk to the Actors” vigorously rehearsing in preparation for a July 5th opening.

Follow this blog for both the latest and most arcane information regarding The Studio Players.

Do you have a secret yearning to be part of a show?  Give in to your dream and join us. We are always looking for volunteers for everything from set construction to hospitality.  If you can swing a hammer, swipe a paintbrush, sew a hem, sweep a broom or follow along in a script checking for actor’s accuracy to the playwright’s vision, The Studio Players can use your help.   Are you an experienced or fledgling actor?  Find out what that adrenaline thrill is all about when the lights come up and the audience hushes to hang on your every word as a character in a live theatre production. It’s seductive, be warned, but the people you’ll meet, the experience you will gain makes live theatre so very worthwhile.
